Modi has previously emphasized the need to protect Hindus in Bangladesh since Muhammad Yunus took charge of the interim government in Dhaka on August 8. This recent discussion with Biden marked the first time the issue was addressed at the highest level between India and the US.

In his post-call update on X, Modi noted: “Spoke to @POTUS @JoeBiden today. We had a detailed exchange on various regional and global issues, including the situation in Ukraine. I reiterated India’s support for peace and stability.” He also mentioned: “We discussed the situation in Bangladesh and stressed the need for restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety and security of minorities, especially Hindus.”

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) emphasized Modi’s consistent stance on Ukraine, advocating for dialogue and diplomacy to achieve peace. Modi’s visit to Kyiv last week included a direct appeal to President Zelenskyy for negotiations with Russia. Zelenskyy expressed a desire for India’s support and proposed India as a potential venue for a peace summit.

The PMO statement highlighted the leaders’ appreciation for the India-US strategic partnership and their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. Modi’s meeting with Biden also covered the ongoing issues in Bangladesh, with both leaders expressing concern over the situation and the need to ensure the safety of minorities.

Amid rising tensions, Yunus assured Modi on August 16 of the interim government’s focus on the protection and security of all minority groups in Bangladesh. Yunus had invited Indian journalists to report on the situation and pledged to promote interfaith harmony during his recent visit to the Hindu community.

Modi is scheduled to travel to the US next month for the UN General Assembly and The Summit of the Future, with Biden potentially hosting a Quad leaders’ summit in New York.
