Nicolas Maduro’s spiritual link to India; Venezuela’s president was devotee of Sathya Sai Baba

Long before the geopolitical isolation and international sanctions that would come to define his presidency, Nicolás Maduro cultivated a profound personal connection to India through spiritual channels, as reported by NDTV. This bond was significantly influenced by his wife, Cilia Flores. Although Maduro was raised in the Catholic tradition, it was Flores who introduced him to the teachings of the Indian spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba prior to their marriage, with both becoming devoted followers. This spiritual foundation later translated into a notable diplomatic and symbolic engagement with India.

A pivotal moment in this journey occurred in 2005, approximately eight years before Maduro assumed the Venezuelan presidency, when he and Flores travelled to the Prasanthi Nilayam ashram in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, to meet Sai Baba. A photograph from this visit captures a young Maduro and Flores seated humbly on the floor alongside the revered figure, highlighting the personal significance of the pilgrimage.

Maduro’s commitment to this spiritual lineage persisted and even entered the official sphere following Sai Baba’s death in 2011. At the time serving as Venezuela’s foreign minister, Maduro actively advocated for and successfully facilitated the passage of an official condolence resolution in the country’s National Assembly, honouring the late guru on a state level. This gesture underscored how Maduro’s personal beliefs could inform formal diplomatic actions. Decades later, this Indian connection continues to manifest in Venezuelan state symbolism. Notably, for its 2024 National Day celebrations, the Venezuelan government issued official invitations adorned with the sacred Sanskrit syllable “Om” in the top left corner. Furthermore, according to the report, Maduro honoured the centenary of Sathya Sai Baba’s birth in November 2025, publicly praising the spiritual master as a “being of light.” These actions collectively illustrate a longstanding and multifaceted India connection for Maduro, one that originates in personal faith, witnessed a formal diplomatic expression, and endures in contemporary state iconography, standing in contrast to his otherwise contentious global stature.
