Maheep Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor tied the knot in 1997, but their journey to marriage was far from conventional. Known for her candid and outspoken personality, Maheep, a star of The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, is married into a family of actors. She is the wife of actor Sanjay Kapoor, the younger brother of industry icons Anil Kapoor and Boney Kapoor.
In a recent interview, Maheep shared the surprising story of how she and Sanjay first met. What was supposed to be a casual “one-night stand” unexpectedly turned into a lifelong partnership. Recalling the moment she met Sanjay, Maheep laughed, “Ours was quite simple. I just had a one-night stand with this man, and I never knew I was going to get married to him. I gatecrashed his party, was dead drunk, and met his whole family — mother-in-law, father-in-law… you know my family, right? Anil, Sunita, Sridevi. And despite being intoxicated, they still accepted me and said, ‘Wow, what an amazing future daughter-in-law.’ They welcomed me with open arms.”
She further explained that her relationship with Sanjay didn’t include the typical proposal. “We didn’t have all this proposal and Instagram stuff. We didn’t care. He just told me, ‘Look, we’re getting married,’” Maheep revealed. They dated for five years before getting married, and now, after 30 years together, she fondly reflects on their unique bond.
Maheep also shared the informal way Sanjay asked her to marry him: “We were at a nightclub in Colaba, Taj. We were drunk, partying, and he just said, ‘Okay, we’re getting married.’ And I said, ‘Okay, fine,’ between tequila shots. That was it. No grand proposal, no getting down on one knee for Instagram — just simple.”
Maheep and Sanjay are proud parents of two children, daughter Shanaya Kapoor and son Jahaan Kapoor.
