Madhepura Bihar Assembly Election Results 2025

Madhepura, a district in Bihar’s Mithila region, is a place of profound political symbolism, known far beyond its location on the banks of the Kosi River. While it is a land of revered temples and is historically marked by the river’s devastating floods, its contemporary identity is overwhelmingly political. It is the birthplace of B.P. Mandal, architect of the OBC reservation movement, and has gained recent attention for the Alstom locomotive factory. However, its primary fame stems from being the battleground for a historic political feud between Lalu Prasad Yadav and Sharad Yadav, two leaders with no native connection to the area, whose rivalry has defined much of its modern electoral history.

The Madhepura Assembly constituency exhibits a remarkable and unwavering pattern of caste-based voting. Since its establishment in 1957, voters have elected a candidate from the Yadav community in every single one of its 17 Assembly elections, a record of consistency unmatched in the region. This loyalty extends to the Lok Sabha seat, where, barring the initial two elections, only Yadav candidates have triumphed since 1971. This dynamic has rendered national parties like the BJP historically irrelevant here, with the political space traditionally contested by the Congress, various Janata Party factions, and Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) currently holds a hat-trick of victories in the Assembly seat, with Chandrashekar Yadav winning consecutively in 2015, 2020, and 2021. A significant factor in the RJD’s consolidation of power is the credit it receives for bringing the Alstom locomotive factory to Madhepura in 2007, a project that was later realized under the Modi government. However, a new political trend is emerging: while voters consistently back the RJD in state elections, they have supported the JD(U) in recent national polls. The JD(U) has won the Madhepura Lok Sabha seat twice in a row and led in all six Assembly segments, including Madhepura, during the 2024 general elections.

The electoral dynamics of Madhepura are fundamentally shaped by its demographic profile. The Yadav community forms the single most dominant bloc, constituting nearly 32 percent of the electorate, which directly explains the constituency’s unwavering preference for Yadav candidates. Other significant voter groups include Scheduled Castes, who make up approximately 17.5 percent of the population, and Muslims, who account for around 11.1 percent. The constituency is predominantly rural, with over 88 percent of voters residing in villages, a key factor influencing political campaigns and policy priorities.

The central political question in Madhepura today is whether the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) can break the established pattern of split-ticket voting. The electorate’s current tendency to support the RJD in Assembly polls and the JD(U) in Lok Sabha elections presents a clear challenge for the ruling coalition. As the 2025 Assembly elections approach, the key test will be to see if the JD(U)’s demonstrated appeal in national elections, combined with the NDA’s organizational strength, can overcome the RJD’s entrenched advantage in state-level politics and finally alter a decades-long legacy of Yadav-dominated leadership in the constituency.
