Kolkata Rape-Murder: Mamata Banerjee to Head Protest Seeking Capital Punishment

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will lead a protest rally at 4 pm today, demanding justice for the junior doctor who was brutally raped and murdered inside the RG Kar College and Hospital seminar hall on August 9.

This rally comes a day after CM Banerjee accused the BJP and CP(M) of trying to politicize the case. The protest is also in response to the Calcutta High Court’s decision on August 13 to transfer the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the CBI.

Previously, CM Banerjee had set a deadline of Sunday for the CBI to secure the death penalty for the arrested accused. This deadline follows allegations from protesters that the police mishandled the investigation and claims that the Trinamool Congress attempted to destroy evidence.
