Gaighat Bihar Assembly Election Results 2025

Gaighat is a general category Assembly constituency situated in the northern part of Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, forming a segment of the Muzaffarpur Lok Sabha seat. Established in 1967, it is a wholly rural constituency encompassing the Gaighat and Bandra community development blocks, along with six gram panchayats from the Katra block. The region’s geography is defined by the flat, fertile plains of the Gandak and Bagmati river systems, which support its agrarian economy but also render it susceptible to seasonal flooding. Demographically, the electorate has grown from 316,108 in 2020 to 330,371 in 2024, with Scheduled Caste voters constituting a significant bloc of approximately 16.4%, and a moderate Muslim population estimated between 12-15%.

Gaighat’s electoral history, spanning 14 polls, is characterized by volatility and the prominent presence of Maheshwar Prasad Yadav. His career exemplifies the constituency’s fluid political allegiances, having won as an Independent in 1990, a Janata Dal candidate in 1995, and an RJD candidate in both 2005 elections. This pattern of churn was further evidenced in 2010 when BJP’s Veena Devi defeated him, only for him to reclaim the seat for the RJD in 2015. This history underscores a political landscape where incumbency is frequently challenged and voter loyalties are far from fixed.

The 2020 Assembly election was a pivotal moment that highlighted the impact of coalition dynamics. The RJD, fielding Niranjan Roy, secured victory over JD(U)’s Maheshwar Prasad Yadav by a margin of 7,566 votes. However, this outcome was heavily influenced by a significant vote split. The Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), having exited the NDA, fielded a candidate who polled over 36,000 votes, effectively splintering the anti-RJD vote and handing the seat to the opposition. Gaighat thus stands as a prime example of how internal alliance fractures can dramatically alter electoral fortunes.

A dramatic reversal of this fragmentation was witnessed in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With the LJP reintegrated into the NDA, the BJP candidate led in the Gaighat Assembly segment by a massive margin of over 50,000 votes, signaling a potent consolidation of the alliance’s voter base. This shift occurs against a socio-economic backdrop of a primarily agrarian economy, reliant on paddy, wheat, and litchi cultivation, and marked by widespread migration for employment. The constituency’s economic profile ensures that issues of agricultural support, local commerce, and job creation remain central to political discourse.

As the constituency looks ahead, the 2025 Assembly elections are poised to be a highly competitive, multi-cornered contest. The RJD will aim to defend the seat against a now-unified NDA, which comprises the JD(U), BJP, and LJP and will seek to capitalize on its demonstrated parliamentary strength. Further adding to the electoral churn is the potential entry of newer parties like the AAP and the Jan Suraaj Party, which could influence the outcome. The central question is whether the NDA’s consolidated appeal will overcome the incumbent’s local presence, or if a fractured vote will once again dictate the result.
